Mathematics and Numeracy

The following page provides information on the coverage of skills taught within mathematics and numeracy for the spring term. These are:

Multiplication and Division
  • recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables, including recognising odd and even numbers

  • use the vocabulary share, of lots of, groups of, sets of and grouping

  • doubling and halving using known facts e.g. 40 + 40

  • use halving and doubling to check answers

  • group amounts using arrays

  •  solve multiplication problems involving using materials, arrays, repeated addition, mental methods, and multiplication and division facts, including problems in contexts.

Statistics
  • ask and answer questions by counting the number of objects in each category and sorting the categories by quantity
  • ask and answer questions about totalling and comparing data

  • interpret and construct pictograms, tally charts, block diagrams and tables

Temperature
  • read scales in 5s and 10s

  • choose and use appropriate measuring equipment to measure temperature

  • Measure, order and compare temperatures

  • Use <> = to compare measurements

  • Solve problems using temperature

Fractions
  • Order simple fractions

  • count forwards and backwards in quarters and halves

  • draw and shade shapes in relation to a given fraction

  • explore fractions of shapes, objects, quantities, money and measure

  • Find fractional quantities linked to known multiplication facts with the use of concrete and pictorial representations

  • write simple fractions e.g. 1/2 of 6 = 3 and recognise the equivalence of 2/4 and 1/2

  • recognise, find, name and write fractions 1/3, 1/4, 2/4 and 3/4 of a length, shape, set of objects or quantity

Pupils are challenged every week to improve their fluency in integral number skills such as multiplication and addition facts. Here is an example of the Year 2 Big Maths Challenge. Pupils are encouraged to use the habit 'Get it Right!' to improve their scores and time. Here is an example below:
