Mathematics and Numeracy

The following page provides information on the coverage of skills taught within mathematics and numeracy for the summer term. These are:

Year 1 – Spring Term

Unit

Skills to be Taught

Place Value

  • count to and across 100, forwards and backwards, beginning with 0 or 1

  • count to and across 100, forwards and backwards from any number

  • read and write numbers from 1 to 20 in numerals

  • Partitioning teen numbers (10s and 1s)

  • count in multiples of twos, fives and tens

  • given a number, identify one more and one less

  • identify and represent numbers using concrete and pictorial representations,

  • Compare and estimate within 20

  • use the language of: equal to, more than, less than (fewer), most, least, odds, evens

Addition

  • Fact families and number bonds to 10.

  • add and subtract one-digit and two-digit numbers to 20, including zero (in line with school calculation policy)

  • read, write and interpret mathematical statements involving addition (+), subtraction (-) and equals (=) signs

  • solve one-step problems that involve addition using concrete objects and pictorial representations, and missing number problems such as 7=? - 9

Shape

  • recognise and name common 2-D shapes [for example, rectangles (including squares), circles and triangles]

  • recognise and name common 3-D shapes [for example, cuboids (including cubes), pyramids and spheres]

  • sort and classify shapes using an appropriate method

  • Being to recognise properties

Subtraction

  • subtract one-digit and two-digit numbers to 20, including zero

  • represent and use number bonds and related subtraction facts within 20

  • read, write and interpret mathematical statements involving subtraction (-) and equals (=) signs

  • solve one-step problems that involve subtraction, using concrete objects and pictorial representations, and missing number problems such as 7=? - 9

Place Value

  • read and write numbers from 1 to 20 in numerals and words

  • Understand that 0 is a place holder – Using counting in 10s as a support (Using Base 10)

  • given a number, identify one more and one less

  • identify and represent numbers using concrete and pictorial representations,

  • Compare, estimate and order within 30

  • use the language of: equal to, more than, less than (fewer), most, least

Algebra

  • Recognise and copy a more complex colour pattern (e.g. red, red, green)  or shapes (ABC / AAB)

  • Generate a pattern following a given criteria  e.g.using multilink blocks; Numicon, shapes etc

  • Identify an error in a given patter/sequence

  • Fill in a missing object/item showing and understanding of the pattern.

  • Complete missing 'values' within a given sequence

  • Begin to explain the rule of the pattern.

  • Use number facts to solve word problems

  • Recognise odd and even numbers recognising 2s, 5s, 10s and look for patterns.

Money
  • recognise and know the value of different denominations of coins and notes

  • discuss the coins – look for similarities and differences

  • talk about what we know about the coins

  • order them in different ways – ask why

  • sort and classify coins and notes giving reasons

Pupils are challenged every week to improve their fluency in integral number skills such as multiplication and addition facts. Here is an example of the Year 1 Big Maths Challenge. Pupils are encouraged to use the habit 'Get it Right!' to improve their scores and time. Here is an example below:
