Year 6

Welcome to Dosbarth Elm and Elder!

Our class teachers are Mr. Howard and Miss Kelly.

Croeso nol to our new Year Six pupils! Can you believe you are now Year Six?! We are delighted to be sharing this space with you, so we can share news and events during this incredibly busy final year.

PE days this year are: Tuesdays and Thursdays - children are expected to bring fresh PE kit to each lesson. They are able to leave school in their PE kit but must ensure school uniform is neatly stored away in their bag (this is good practice for secondary school).

Home Learning challenges will continue to be sent out via the Google Classroom. In addition to this, we will be continuing to set mathematical challenges via our Matheletics platform. Children are welcome to borrow a physical reading book from our library and online books will be available via Oxford Reading Buddies - your child will be provided login details for this.

This term, we are excited about launching our first whole-school context for learning of the year: A window to my world!

Our class text for this term is Wonder by R.J. Palacio.

“Wonder” is a touching and powerful novel by R.J. Palacio that tells the story of August “Auggie” Pullman, a young boy born with a facial difference that has kept him from attending a mainstream school — until now. As Auggie enters fifth grade at Beecher Prep, he faces the challenges of being different in a world that often doesn’t know how to handle those who look or act differently. The book explores themes of kindness, empathy, acceptance, and the importance of standing up against bullying. Through Auggie’s journey, as well as the perspectives of his family and classmates, Wonder encourages readers to celebrate uniqueness and to choose kindness in their everyday interactions. It’s a deeply moving story that will resonate with both children and adults, offering valuable lessons on how to treat others with compassion and understanding - which is a learning thread of our new context.

A Window to my World

" Looking back and seeing your planet as a planet is just an amazing feeling. It's a totally different perspective, and it makes you appreciate, actually, how fragile our existence is."

In this context, we will explore the universe, heading out into space and looking closely at our solar system. We will explore distance, time and temperature as we study the properties of the different planets. We will have opportunities to discuss and write about what is important to us as humans of the earth and celebrate the diversity of humanity. We will give opportunities for children to write creatively using first-person narrative as they welcome a stranger from another galaxy into their world. In humanities, children will look at significant people throughout history who have helped to change perspectives for the good of humanity and made a significant impact on the world. Through Expressive Arts, children will devise dance routines to music from War of the Worlds. In addition to this, children will also study 'Starry night' by Vincent van Gogh and learn techniques in painting to create illusions of movement.
